PRICE AND THE PERFUMES OF FREEDOM- You don't have to spend a million to smell like a trillion! Cindy Zach Ferro

from: LDF NEWSLETTER , 25/01/2008

Many a question has been brought to our attention as to why our fragrances are so frightfully inexpensive. Lorenzo Dante Ferro has one, exclusive sales-point in the entire world where we receive visitors and clients from all over. This was a choice we made from the very day our doors opened in 1982 knowing that we intended to create a private client portfolio of perfume aficionados who would actually be willing to travel to purchase our fragrances. This after all my dear friends, is what true niche market perfumes are all about: Travel and Mystique. Over the years, these visits to our studio have become a pilgrimage of sorts. Depending upon where you live, it can be quite a long trip to reach us: roughly an eleven-hour flight from San Francisco to Venice plus the drive to our studio, a five-hour drive from Rome or Vienna, a seven-hour drive from Zurich and an eight-hour flight from Manhattan plus the drive in from Venice airport, to mention only a few of the trips our beloved clients take to purchase their favorite perfumes. We recognized that this could be a sacrifice indeed, so from the very onset, we decided to reward our fragrant travelers with perfumes of great beauty at dazzling-low prices and dedicate our time unselfishly to them upon their arrival. Now, how can we actually manage to keep such low prices? ● Each fragrance formulation has a specific cost price, given by the ingredients they contain. At any given moment of the year, the costs of natural raw materials may fluctuate, even with great frequency, but this has never stopped Lorenzo Dante Ferro from utilizing essential oils of great quality. He is a creative Master Perfumer who enjoys the rare luxury of working for himself. Instead of having to focus his energy on spiraling the costs of his formulas downwards to meet price limitations for mass-market distribution, he has the unique privilege of concentrating his efforts towards achieving beauty when creating to add new perfumes to his own personal line This is the opposite of general perfume industry operations, where a perfumer is required to work towards a kilo/pound price. Artistically speaking, this can be rather stifling: comparable to requiring an artist to paint while wearing sun-glasses and hand-cuffs and limiting his palette to the colour blue. Although these perfumers are certain to produce something of intrinsic value or perhaps even reach a measure of commercial success, they personally have yet to experience the beauty of freedom in perfume creation. As a consequence, their products without a doubt are destined to become a reflection of this economic cage. In fact, thousands of perfumes that have come and gone over the past years are an uneasy testimony to this observation. ● At Lorenzo Dante Ferro, we have our own design atelier for packaging. You will notice, that our fragrances all have the same packaging. The reasons behind this are twofold. The first being that this style of packaging was developed to create a culturally recognizable form (a book) which would not place limits on a growing perfume collection but would actually help to streamline our production, while encouraging Lorenzo Dante Ferro to create endlessly for his own collection. Secondly, one style of packaging would serve to remove the packaging “blinders” from our clients who, in the past, had made their choices based on the association of colours, boxes and bottles: never exclusively on the fragrance. Their choice had been based on preconceived notions of what the fragrance could probably smell like suggested by the packaging visuals so they were never truly free when making their perfume selections. The simplification of our packaging has been a success throughout the years: a book demands the greatest of acknowledgment and the greatest of respect, be it written with words or the essence of words. ● The price of each bottle of fragrance you purchase from Lorenzo Dante Ferro, does not include the costs of: sales agents, distributors, retail-sales points, television and print advertising, royalties and licensing fees nor samples and promotional campaigns. Most importantly, the price of each bottle does not contain the cost of Lorenzo Dante Ferro's time. He has dedicated this most precious ingredient whole-heartedly to his personal perfume creations, to the joy and satisfaction of those who know and love his fragrances. If we were to add all of the costs listed above, ours would be one of the most expensive perfume collections in the world today. ● It is virtually impossible to try our fragrances without coming to the studio or purchasing one on-line. To invite you to do so and limit your financial risk, we have maintained our ecommerce prices in conformity with our Creative Studio prices. It is our desire that all of our mail order clients share in the same price privileges enjoyed by those who have the fun and good fortune of purchasing a plane ticket for Italy. If you are truly a lover of fine perfumes, it is possible to be thrilled many times over with a minimal purchase when shopping at Lorenzo Dante Ferro. So don't be suspicious about our prices, be happy. You don't have to spend a million to smell like a trillion! Cindy Zach Ferro

OLFACTIVE VICES AND VIRTUES A few words against the inexorable decadence of the olfactory sense.

from: Cindy's Newsletter, 13/04/2007

People today, in an effort to improve their standard of living and their place in society, are more willing than ever to dedicate numerous hours to becoming more physically attractive, more socially responsible and more culturally acceptable. They juggle their hectic schedules making ample time for the gym, courses to learn a foreign language or perhaps courses that will turn them into the most discerning connoisseurs of fine cuisine and yet, at the very same time, we are growing sensorially poor in a world that concentrates more and more on the visual aspects of things. If man is a social animal, why is it that we give such little time and consideration to improving the most primitive of man’s senses, the sense of smell? What does it take to understand that it is this special human sense which perceives continuously, that is the key that opens the most profound side of each one us? We judge many things by the various perfumes and odours we smell, yet we are word poor when we must describe what we actually perceive. It is of fundamental importance that we push ourselves to learn how to decipher and describe what we smell if we intend to improve our olfactive capabilities and reinforce the memories which will help us to give a real value to the quality of life. If we pay closer attention, in a simple way, to the information that our sense of smell collects, we can begin to appreciate our special ability to make an immediate, instinctive judgement, we can learn to describe fragrances with words used to define colors and harmony, we can deepen our understanding of the human psyche and discover that the nose is much more than just a protuberance from the face. ©CMF
